The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women has urged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ensure that maximum women participate in the upcoming by-elections.

Previously, the voting results in PK-23 (Shangla) were termed as ‘void’ due to the required 10% women voter turnout for a constituency votes to be pointed. The re-polling at Shangla for PK-23 constituency will be held on 10th September, 2018.

In view of this, the Commission along with the local NGO’s have urged the ECP collectively to make sure that women are not barred from casting their votes this time.

They also said that previously ECP had not taken quick action on women not being allowed to give votes. They also noticed that there was a lack of women-only polling stations which served as a contributing factor to the low women voter turnout.

Therefore, ECP has been asked to fulfill the demands for women-only polling stations along with the presence of on duty women staff to facilitate the voters.
